Ukraine peace in focus as Zelenskyy meets European leaders

Published on: December 8, 2025 4:03 PM

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet leaders from the UK, France, and Germany in London on Monday. They will discuss a US-backed peace proposal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy called recent talks with the US “constructive, although not easy.”

US and Ukrainian officials met over the weekend but reported no major breakthrough. Donald Trump claimed Zelenskyy had not yet read the proposal. Kyiv’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said Zelenskyy would review all documents and updates on Monday.

The peace plan envisions Ukraine giving up some territory for security guarantees, a point still disputed. Starmer emphasized that Ukraine must determine its own future and proposed a European peacekeeping role. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not endorsed the plan and called parts unworkable.

Trump’s team has pushed for a deal, but progress is slow due to disputes over occupied land and security guarantees. US envoys met Putin last week without a clear breakthrough. Zelenskyy said Ukraine remains committed to working in good faith with the US to achieve peace.

Observers say the talks highlight tensions between Kyiv, Moscow, and Western powers. Key issues include territorial control, Ukraine’s security, and the fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Both sides continue cautious diplomacy as international pressure grows to end the war.
