LAHORE: The Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) has urged the Afghan Taliban’s interim government to ensure the effective implementation of a recent resolution passed by more than 1,000 Afghan clerics that opposes militancy beyond Afghanistan’s borders. The council described the declaration as a constructive move toward regional peace and stability.

PUC Chairman Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi said the responsibility now lay with the Afghan authorities to translate the scholars’ declaration into concrete action. He noted that the position taken by Afghan clerics closely mirrored the stance of religious scholars in Pakistan.

Explaining the key points of the declaration, Mr Ashrafi said both sides rejected aggression and terrorism in their respective countries. He stressed that Afghan soil should not be used for attacks against any other country and added that Pakistan also opposed any cross-border violence.
He emphasised that peace and stability in the region were a shared responsibility and served the collective interests of neighbouring states. In this regard, he appreciated the diplomatic efforts of Turkiye, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in facilitating dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Mr Ashrafi warned against any attempts to incite opposition to Pakistan’s armed forces, stating that such actions would be firmly resisted. He said religious seminaries and mosques would stand with state institutions if national security or stability was threatened.
Highlighting the need for unity, he called on all political parties to demonstrate maturity by engaging in dialogue. According to him, consensus-building was essential to strengthen the country’s defence, economy and internal cohesion.
The PUC chairman criticised the use of abusive and inflammatory language in politics, arguing that hate speech undermined peace. He said scholars from all schools of thought had unanimously declared violent conduct unacceptable.

He reiterated that any political or ideological objectives should be pursued through peaceful and constitutional means. Mr Ashrafi also strongly condemned attacks and criticism directed at the ISPR director general following his recent press conference, calling such actions irresponsible.
