MEXICO CITY: A physical altercation broke out in the Congress of Mexico City on Monday when women lawmakers from rival political parties clashed during a heated session, with the incident broadcast live on television. The confrontation involved members of the right-wing National Action Party (PAN) and the ruling leftist Morena party.

The scuffle began after a group of PAN legislators approached the main podium to protest what they claimed was a violation of legislative rules by Morena, which holds a majority in the chamber. The dispute was linked to a debate over proposed reforms to the city government’s transparency oversight agency, according to local media reports.

Video footage showed lawmakers from both sides shouting at one another before the confrontation turned physical. Several legislators were seen pushing, elbowing, slapping and pulling hair as Morena members attempted to remove PAN lawmakers from the podium, while the latter resisted leaving the area.

Following the incident, PAN representatives accused the ruling party of using force to silence dissent. Andres Atayde, an aide to PAN lawmakers, told a press conference that the opposition had taken the podium peacefully and that violence was used to regain control of the session.

PAN lawmaker Daniela Alvarez also criticised the conduct of the majority party, describing the incident as regrettable and unbefitting of a governing group. She said the episode reflected poorly on the political culture within the city’s legislature.
After the altercation, PAN lawmakers exited the chamber, allowing Morena legislators and their allies to continue the debate in the absence of the opposition. Updates posted on the Congress of Mexico City’s official social media accounts confirmed that the session resumed shortly afterward.

Morena representatives later rejected accusations of wrongdoing, arguing that the opposition had disrupted proceedings. Party spokesman Paulo Garcia said the incident highlighted what he described as the opposition’s tendency to resort to confrontation rather than debate, adding that such behaviour undermines legislative dialogue.
