Double-decker buses introduced in Karachi, public service begins today

Double-decker buses have once again been introduced for the people of Karachi after 65 years. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Provincial Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah inaugurated the double-decker bus service in the city.

Speaking to the media at the inauguration ceremony, Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said that they had promised the people that double-decker buses would be on the roads of Karachi by December 2025, and today, on December 31, this promise has been fulfilled. He congratulated the entire nation in advance on the New Year and said that the Sindh government’s effort in the new-year is to provide maximum transport facilities to the people of Sindh, starting with Karachi.He said that today marks the experimental launch of the double-decker buses in Karachi. From tomorrow, people will be able to travel on them officially.He further said that on the instructions of the Chief Minister of Sindh, efforts are underway to introduce double-decker buses on every major road in Karachi in 2026.

New routes of electric vehicle buses are also being launched across Sindh, including Karachi, starting next week. He added that according to the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party, transport is a basic need of the people, as public transport is used for business, employment, and education. The Chief Minister of Sindh has ensured that transport projects are designed to provide maximum benefit to the public.

The aim of introducing air-conditioned buses, low-fare buses, and subsidizing fares is to make public transport more accessible for the people.He said that around 1.5 million people travel daily in Karachi through the People’s Bus Service, while 75,000 people use the Orange Line and Green Line BRT services. With the integration of these routes, efforts are being made to benefit up to 100,000 additional people.Sharjeel Inam Memon said that public transport facilities are being expanded on different routes on a daily basis, and efforts are ongoing to introduce bus services on every road in every district of Sindh.

In response to a question, he said that Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and the Mayor of Karachi are launching major development projects for the city. The Sindh cabinet has allocated more than Rs 9 billion for roads in Karachi’s industrial areas. Several mega projects are expected to be completed by March 2026. Work is currently underway on Shahrah Bhutto, Link Road, Red Line BRT, Yellow Line BRT, and other projects. He acknowledged that roads remain a challenge but said that continuous work is being done for their improvement under the personal supervision of the Chief Minister of Sindh.Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Murad and Sindh Government Spokesperson Mustafa Abdullah Baloch also attended the ceremony. Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi, Managing Director SMTA Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, CEO People’s Bus Service Sohaib Shafiq, Operational Manager People’s Bus Service Abdul Shakoor, and other officials were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
