Suthra Punjab sets global cleanliness benchmark

Published on: January 4, 2026 2:17 PM

The Suthra Punjab programme has achieved a major global milestone, gaining international recognition as one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive waste management systems. The achievement highlights Punjab’s growing leadership in modern, climate-smart urban governance.

International observers praised the initiative for setting new standards in efficiency and scale, noting that innovation-driven public services can successfully emerge from developing regions. The programme was described as a powerful example of how strong leadership can transform complex urban challenges.

Under Suthra Punjab, around 30,000 vehicles and more than 150,000 workers are actively deployed every day to manage nearly 50,000 tons of waste across the province. This extensive operational network ensures cleaner cities while maintaining consistency and speed.

The programme uses real-time monitoring of workers and vehicles, creating transparency and improving accountability. A KPI-based contractor payment system further strengthens performance, while a digital complaints mechanism encourages public participation and rapid issue resolution.

Beyond cleanliness, the initiative has generated dignified employment for over 150,000 people and strengthened local industry through domestic manufacturing of machinery and technology. International certifications and third-party verification have further enhanced global confidence in the programme.

Looking ahead, authorities are developing solar energy projects, urban forests, recycling plants, and waste-to-energy facilities to expand environmental benefits. These future plans are already attracting international investor interest, reinforcing Punjab’s position as a global model for sustainable waste management.
