Pakistan braces for rain, snow from Jan 20

Published on: January 17, 2026 6:15 PM

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall across several parts of the country. A system of westerly winds entered Pakistan and will continue until January 19, intensifying from January 20. Authorities have warned citizens to stay cautious, especially in hilly and low-lying areas prone to slippery roads.

Intermittent rain with gusty winds and thunderstorms is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until January 19, along with light to moderate snowfall in mountainous areas including Murree, Galiyat, Chitral, Dir, and Swat. From January 20 to 23, heavy snow is likely in Murree, Galiyat, Kalam, Shangla, Kohistan, and Abbottabad.

Rain and thunderstorms will spread to Islamabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sahiwal, Multan, Faisalabad, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Bahawalpur divisions, while most parts of Peshawar, Hazara, Malakand, Mardan, Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan will also experience rain and strong winds. Balochistan and Sindh will see rainfall on January 21-23, with moderate to heavy snowfall in Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, and Zhob.

The PMD has urged drivers to reduce speed and remain vigilant, as slippery roads and reduced visibility may cause accidents. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and secure homes in areas prone to heavy snowfall and thunderstorms. Authorities have also prepared contingency plans to respond to weather-related emergencies across the affected regions.

This weather system is expected to continue disrupting daily life until January 23, affecting transportation, schools, and power supplies. Citizens are encouraged to follow PMD alerts and local authorities’ instructions for safety and timely updates. The department will continue monitoring the situation and provide regular forecasts until the system passes.
