Macron questions Trump’s Greenland moves

Published on: January 20, 2026 4:15 PM

French President Emmanuel Macron told Donald Trump he did not understand the US president’s “actions on Greenland,” according to a screenshot Trump shared online. Macron also suggested Trump could invite Ukrainians, Danes, Syrians, and Russians to the margins of the upcoming G7 meeting.

In the messages, Macron invited Trump to dinner in Paris and said he was “totally in line” with him on Syria. He added that the two could collaborate on Iran, calling Trump his “friend.” A source close to Macron confirmed the messages’ authenticity.

Trump shared the messages on Truth Social hours after threatening 200% tariffs on French wines and champagnes. The move is part of his effort to push Macron to join his “Board of Peace” initiative to resolve global conflicts.

The post follows EU leaders’ plan for an emergency summit in Brussels over Trump’s Greenland-related tariffs. Macron has repeatedly called the threats unacceptable and emphasized Europe may need to engage Russia directly if US-led Ukraine peace efforts fail.

Macron is scheduled to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, returning to Paris the same day. Trump will arrive in Davos on Wednesday. It remains unclear when Macron sent the messages shared by Trump.
