China’s President Xi Jinping on Monday called India a “good neighbour, friend and partner” in a message to mark India’s Republic Day. Xi congratulated President Droupadi Murmu and praised the growing China-India relations over the past year. He described the two nations as the “dragon and the elephant dancing together,” highlighting their significance for global peace and prosperity.
Xi said China hopes both sides will expand exchanges, increase cooperation, and address each other’s concerns. He emphasized building healthy and stable ties despite past border tensions. Xi called maintaining a strong partnership the “right choice” for both countries.

China and India share a 3,800 km poorly demarcated border that has been disputed since the 1950s. Relations worsened after the 2020 clash in which 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers died in hand-to-hand combat. Following the clash, the Himalayan border was heavily militarized by both sides.
The countries have improved ties since last year through a series of high-level bilateral visits. Direct flights resumed in 2025, and both nations increased trade and investment flows. Analysts say warming relations reflect efforts to stabilize the region amid global geopolitical tensions.

Xi’s message comes as both nations navigate trade disputes, including issues over solar cells and IT goods. Experts say ongoing dialogue and cooperation could strengthen economic and diplomatic ties.
