Karachi control debate intensifies after Mustafa Kamal’s fresh demand

Published on: January 27, 2026 3:49 PM

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has once again called for Karachi to be placed under federal control, saying the city cannot survive under what he described as weak provincial governance. He argued that Karachi is too important to be mismanaged, therefore the federal government must step in to protect the lives, economy, and future of millions who live there.

Moreover, Kamal stated that the Constitution already provides a legal path for such a move under Article 148, allowing the federation to take control through a simple notification. He added that this step would not violate democratic values, but instead ensure that Karachi receives the serious attention and planning it urgently requires.

Referring to the recent Gul Plaza tragedy, Kamal said people lost their lives because of official negligence, which he called an act of cruelty rather than a simple failure. He stressed that such deadly incidents prove why Karachi should no longer remain in the hands of those who fail to ensure basic safety and governance.

Meanwhile, Kamal also reacted strongly to the withdrawal of security from MQM-Pakistan leaders, including himself, saying such moves were meant to silence political voices. However, he insisted that fear would not stop them, as Karachi’s problems are too serious to ignore or cover up through pressure tactics.

Furthermore, he accused the provincial government of giving protection to groups that openly speak against the country while blocking those who demand better governance for Karachi. According to him, these actions weaken national unity and create instability, while ordinary citizens continue to suffer from broken infrastructure and unsafe public spaces.

Finally, Kamal revealed that MQM-Pakistan has formally raised this issue with the federal government and in cabinet meetings, showing that the matter is gaining national attention. He concluded that while other countries progress, Karachi’s children fall into open drains, which clearly shows why urgent and strong federal action is needed.
