OpenAI has launched a new application called Prism, aiming to transform how scientists manage and execute research workflows. The tool is designed to do for scientific research what advanced coding agents have done for software development, by integrating artificial intelligence directly into the research and publishing process.

Prism is built on the foundation of Crixet, a cloud-based LaTeX platform that OpenAI has acquired alongside the launch. LaTeX is a widely used typesetting system in the scientific community, essential for preparing academic papers and journal submissions. However, despite its importance, LaTeX can be time-consuming, particularly when creating diagrams, managing references, or coordinating multiple tools during the publication process.
Like Crixet, Prism offers comprehensive LaTeX editing features paired with an integrated AI assistant. The key upgrade is the replacement of Crixet’s previous Chirp agent with GPT-5.2 Thinking, OpenAI’s advanced reasoning model. This allows Prism to go beyond formatting assistance and support deeper research tasks.
During a press demonstration, OpenAI showcased how Prism can identify relevant scientific literature and automatically generate bibliographies for academic papers. While emphasizing that researchers remain responsible for verifying citations, OpenAI executives highlighted the tool’s potential to significantly reduce the time spent on repetitive tasks.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s vice president of science, said the company is mindful of concerns around quality, trust, and accountability as AI adoption increases in academia. He stressed that OpenAI’s approach focuses on embedding AI transparently within research workflows, ensuring scientists stay in control of their work.
In another demonstration, Prism was used to create a graduate-level lesson plan on general relativity and generate problem sets for students. OpenAI hopes these capabilities will allow researchers and educators to devote more time to discovery, teaching, and critical thinking.

Prism is currently available to users with personal ChatGPT accounts and supports unlimited projects and collaborators. OpenAI plans to expand access to Business, Team, Enterprise, and Education subscribers in the near future, with no plans to offer Crixet as a standalone product.
