AI companion toys take center stage at CES 2026

Published on: January 30, 2026 4:50 PM

LAS VEGAS: AI companion toys emerged as one of the most prominent trends at CES 2026, highlighting the growing demand for technology designed to form long-term emotional connections with users. Of the nearly 60 companies showcasing AI companion products at the event, more than 80% were Chinese enterprises, underscoring China’s leading role in the fast-expanding sector.

Unlike traditional smart devices, AI companion toys are designed to learn user habits, respond emotionally, and remain present as constant, non-judgmental companions. For 27-year-old user Nancy Liu, the experience is deeply personal. She sleeps beside a warm, breathing AI device and describes the comfort it provides. “It feels like something is waiting for me,” she said. “Not judging, not rushing—just there.”

One of the most talked-about products at CES was “Sweekar,” billed as the world’s first AI pocket pet that physically grows. Developed by Shenzhen-based startup Takway.AI, the palm-sized device progresses through physical life stages—from egg to baby, teen, and adult—mirroring the emotional development of its AI system. The device also emits warmth and simulates breathing to enhance realism.

“This physical growth unfolds in sync with the AI companion’s emotional development,” said Takway CEO Irving Gao. The company plans to launch Sweekar through crowdfunding this spring, with a projected price range of $150 to $200.

Market data suggests strong consumer interest. According to Taobao, AI toy transactions surged by 1,600% in 2025, while JD.com reported sales nearing 700 million yuan (approximately $100 million).

Analysts say the appeal of AI companions spans multiple demographics. Jiang Han, a senior analyst at Pangoal, said AI-powered toys have “clear potential as a new driver of consumption,” with distinct markets for children, Gen Z, and the elderly.

Examples include JD.com’s “chatty parrot” robot for seniors, which offers local-language interaction and health reminders, and Shanghai-based Robopoet’s soft toy “Fuzozo,” popular among younger users for its ability to purr and respond emotionally.
