The United States has strongly criticized South Africa’s decision to expel Israel’s top diplomat, calling the move politically driven and harmful to the country’s own diplomatic standing. Washington said the action reflected grievance-based politics rather than responsible international engagement.
According to U.S. officials, the expulsion followed public remarks made by the Israeli diplomat regarding the ruling African National Congress party’s alleged links with Hamas and other extremist groups. The State Department argued that punishing diplomatic speech undermines democratic values and damages long-term foreign relations.

Meanwhile, South Africa justified its decision by accusing the diplomat of violating diplomatic norms, including making insulting statements about President Cyril Ramaphosa. The government declared him persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country within seventy-two hours.
In response, Israel quickly expelled South Africa’s senior diplomatic representative, signaling a sharp escalation in already fragile relations between the two countries. Both governments have now effectively downgraded formal diplomatic communication channels.

Tensions have remained high since South Africa filed a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice over its military actions in Gaza. Israel rejected the accusations, stating that its campaign was an act of self-defense following the October 2023 Hamas attacks.

Overall, the episode highlights growing geopolitical divisions that continue to reshape global alliances.
