Gandapur credits Naqvi for role in Imran Khan release

Gandapur praises Mohsin Naqvi for his efforts to secure Imran Khan's release

ISLAMABAD: Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur has credited Mohsin Naqvi with playing what he called an unparalleled role in securing the release of Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Speaking to media, Gandapur said no one worked as tirelessly as Naqvi for Khan’s release. “He even spoke directly to the Field Marshal, a feat no one else could achieve,” he claimed, describing Naqvi as the only individual capable of confronting senior military leadership on the matter.

Gandapur added that with the PTI founder now released, the party’s focus has shifted from political struggle to public welfare. “We have moved toward addressing people’s health and well-being and take responsibility for this progress,” he said.

However, the former chief minister criticised internal divisions within PTI, warning that protests and sit-ins alone would not ensure Khan’s freedom. He alleged the presence of ill-intentioned elements within party ranks and said no leader currently holds undisputed authority to make key decisions. “Many are blaming each other instead of working collectively,” he remarked.

Earlier, PTI’s parliamentary party met in Islamabad to discuss organisational issues, including criticism of overseas-based YouTubers accused by some lawmakers of harming the party while earning foreign currency abroad. During the session, some members also criticised Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, claiming recent developments were negatively affected by her actions.

Participants said there was also discussion about leadership and decision-making authority. PTI lawmaker Junaid Akbar suggested that responsibility for key decisions could rest with Mahmood Khan Achakzai, noting Khan had earlier delegated authority to opposition leaders.

Sources indicated that Raja Nasir Abbas may meet Khan in the coming days, as PTI continues internal deliberations while navigating political and organisational challenges.
