Female student dies in tragic hostel fall at FJMU; police probe possible suicide

LAHORE: Police have launched an investigation into the death of a female student who fell from the third floor of the hostel at Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) on Tuesday, according to an initial report.

The student, identified by medical officials as 22-year-old Fariha, a final-year MBBS candidate, sustained severe head injuries after reportedly jumping from the rooftop area of the hostel building. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition but could not survive due to excessive blood loss, doctors said.

Officials stated that Fariha’s examinations were in progress at the time of the incident. One of her final-year papers had already been completed, while another was scheduled for February 19. Investigators noted she had been preparing for the upcoming exam in recent days.

In its preliminary findings, police said the student had reportedly been suffering from severe depression for approximately six months. A medical board has been constituted to determine the exact cause and circumstances of death, while statements from classmates, hostel staff and family members are being recorded as part of the inquiry.

Police said Fariha was originally from Kashmir and had been residing in Lahore with her father during her studies. Authorities added that the investigation remains ongoing and no final conclusion has been reached.

The incident follows a similar case reported last month in Narowal district, where a student at a private college attempted suicide by jumping from a second-floor building. She sustained critical injuries and was shifted to Lahore General Hospital, where doctors confirmed a frontal skull fracture. Police had cited domestic issues as the apparent reason in the preliminary report of that case.

Officials urged educational institutions to strengthen student counselling and mental health support systems to help prevent such tragedies, while the current investigation continues to establish the full sequence of events leading to Fariha’s death.
