Building collapse in Pakistan's Karachi kills 13 people, including women, children | Daily Sabah

KARACHI: At least 13 people were killed and 14 others injured when a gas compressor machine exploded, triggering the partial collapse of a residential building in Karachi Soldier Bazaar area early Thursday, officials said.

The explosion occurred around Sehri time on the first day of Ramadan, when residents were preparing pre-dawn meals. Witnesses said the powerful blast shook nearby buildings and caused panic in the densely populated neighbourhood.

According to rescue authorities, emergency teams rushed to the site immediately after receiving distress calls and began pulling victims from the debris. Narrow streets in the locality slowed the movement of heavy machinery and ambulances, complicating rescue efforts. Officials warned that one or two people may still be trapped under the rubble as search operations continue.

All injured persons were shifted to Dr. Ruth K. M. Pfau Civil Hospital for treatment. A spokesperson for Rescue 1122 confirmed that the blast was caused by a gas compressor pump installed on the ground floor of the two-storey residential structure. Authorities clarified that it was neither a gas leakage nor a cylinder explosion.

Preliminary findings indicate the compressor explosion caused a structural failure that led to the collapse of a significant portion of the building. Deputy Commissioner East Nasrullah Abbasi said the victims included a young girl and three women. Two of the deceased have been identified as 10-year-old Nazia and 60-year-old Riaz.

Residents said gas shortages in parts of Karachi have persisted, including during Sehri hours, forcing some households and small facilities to rely on compressors and alternative arrangements. Authorities have launched an investigation into the installation and safety compliance of the compressor system.

Rescue teams remained at the site through the day, continuing efforts to locate any remaining survivors amid fears the toll could rise.
