Sindh declares “Rain Emergency” ahead of monsoon

The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has declared a “Rain Emergency” across the province of Sindh, with special focus on Karachi, as monsoon rains approach, according to local media reports.

SBCA officials said the authority is on high alert, forming four dedicated emergency teams to operate in four-hour shifts. These teams are tasked with responding immediately to any rain-related incidents, including building collapses, debris hazards, and other emergencies in Karachi and other urban areas.

The authority has previously identified hundreds of buildings in Karachi as extremely dangerous, and continuous monitoring will be conducted to prevent casualties during the monsoon season. A central Rain Emergency Cell has also been activated at the SBCA Suk Centre. The cell is staffed with technical experts, laborers, machinery, and support personnel, all ready for immediate deployment in case of emergencies.

Residents living in high-risk buildings have been advised to remain cautious and report any emergencies promptly through the SBCA helpline. Authorities emphasized the importance of vigilance to avoid injuries or fatalities.

The DG of SBCA has instructed all district directors to remain on-site in their areas to personally supervise field teams, ensuring a timely and coordinated response to rain-related incidents.

Officials stressed that these proactive measures aim to minimize both loss of life and property damage during the monsoon season. The alert highlights the continued risks posed by structurally unsafe buildings and the importance of preventive action in urban areas prone to heavy rainfall.
