Punjab announced free public transport across cities in the province

Published on: April 3, 2026 3:15 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced free public transport services across all cities in the province, aiming to provide relief to citizens amid rising fuel costs and economic pressure.

Following the directive, passengers will no longer be required to purchase tickets for major transport systems, including the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus Service, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Bus. The move is expected to benefit millions of daily commuters, particularly those from low- and middle-income groups who rely heavily on public transport.

In addition to free travel, the chief minister also announced a subsidy for farmers, stating that Rs100 per litre of diesel subsidy will be provided per acre to support the agricultural sector. The initiative is part of broader efforts to cushion the impact of increasing fuel prices and inflation.

Speaking on the occasion, Maryam Nawaz said the government would not leave citizens alone during difficult times. She urged people to prefer public transport over private vehicles, especially under extraordinary circumstances, to reduce fuel consumption and ease financial burdens.

She further highlighted that the global economic situation has worsened due to ongoing conflicts, which have contributed to rising energy prices worldwide. However, she assured that the government remains committed to providing relief and would take further measures as conditions improve.

The announcement comes shortly after the federal government significantly increased petroleum prices, with petrol and diesel witnessing record hikes. These increases have intensified economic challenges for the general public, prompting provincial authorities to introduce relief measures.

Officials believe that offering free public transport will not only ease commuting costs but also encourage energy conservation and reduce traffic congestion in major urban centres.
