Govt directs joint survey of river embankments ahead of monsoon

Published on: April 17, 2026 2:13 AM

The federal government has approved a joint survey of river embankments across the country ahead of the monsoon season, aiming to strengthen flood preparedness and reduce potential risks.

According to officials, the decision was taken as part of intensified efforts to prevent possible flooding situations. Following a letter from military authorities, the Federal Flood Commission has issued formal instructions to irrigation departments in all four provinces.

The survey will be conducted jointly by provincial irrigation departments and the Corps of Army Engineers. Authorities have been directed to identify weaknesses in protective embankments and take immediate corrective measures where required. The official communication further instructs all provinces to submit comprehensive reports to the Federal Flood Commission after completing the survey.

Departments have been asked to ensure that all relevant data and findings are submitted by May 15, as part of coordinated national flood preparedness measures.

Murree traffic police issue advisory amid continuous rain

The City Traffic Police, Murree, has issued a travel advisory for citizens and tourists, as continuous rain on Thursday has made roads slippery and likely to disrupt traffic flow.

Chief Traffic Officer(CTO) Murree, Imran Razaq, urged motorists to exercise caution, advising them to reduce speed and avoid sudden braking to prevent accidents. He said drivers should maintain proper control of their vehicles and keep a safe distance from those ahead.

The advisory stressed the importance of using wipers and headlights during rain and warned against overtaking on slippery roads. It also called for extra care while negotiating turns in mountainous areas.

The CTO advised motorists to ensure their vehicles were in good condition before travel, particularly tyres, brakes and wipers, and to use fog lights in case of heavy rain or fog. Citizens were also urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on weather conditions.

He said that in case of any emergency, citizens should contact the traffic helpline at 051-9269200 for timely assistance.
