PM Shehbaz orders gradual transition to electric transport

Published on: April 23, 2026 3:06 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed a gradual nationwide shift to electric vehicles. The move aims to strengthen energy security and reduce reliance on imported fuel. It will affect public transport systems, government fleets, and future infrastructure planning.

The directive came during a high-level meeting on energy security in Islamabad. The prime minister stressed that energy planning is central to the country’s future. He said timely government actions had helped avert a potential energy crisis. He also highlighted the importance of long-term strategies amid global uncertainty.

Furthermore, the government plans to transition public transport and official vehicles to electric options. Electric buses and motorcycles will be introduced for government use. Authorities will also accelerate the installation of EV charging stations nationwide. In addition, a framework will support battery acquisition for storing surplus solar energy.

Officials emphasized boosting local production of high-quality batteries to support the transition. This step aims to lower costs and build domestic industry capacity. Meanwhile, authorities are preparing pilot projects for grid-level battery storage systems. Solar consumers are also being encouraged to adopt battery storage solutions.
