No relief: Court denies bail to doctor accused in Rs 35 crore online investment scam

The Lahore High Court has rejected the bail application of a suspect accused of filming an inappropriate video of a doctor and attempting to blackmail her for money.

Justice Waheed Khan heard the case involving the accused, identified as Israr Majeed, who is facing charges related to privacy violation and extortion. During the proceedings, a representative from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), along with the deputy attorney general, presented the prosecution’s arguments.

According to the prosecution, the suspect had been working as a driver at a private hospital but allegedly resorted to illegal actions after losing his job. It was claimed that he collaborated with a security guard to secretly install cameras in a washroom at a residence, where the victim, a female doctor, was recorded without consent.

The FIA told the court that the suspect later used the footage to demand Rs2.5 million from the victim, threatening to release the video if the payment was not made. The case was registered following a complaint filed by the doctor’s son, after which the accused was arrested.

During the hearing, the defence counsel argued that the accused had already spent around 10 months in jail and maintained that the truth of the allegations would only be determined during the trial.

However, the court dismissed the bail plea, stating that the nature of the offence did not warrant relief at this stage. The judge remarked that the alleged act was serious and did not make the accused eligible for bail.

Legal experts note that cases involving blackmail and invasion of privacy are treated with strict scrutiny due to their psychological and social impact on victims.

The case will now proceed to trial, where evidence and witness testimonies will be examined in detail before a final verdict is reached.
