South Korea investigates Gulf ship blaze

Published on: May 5, 2026 9:10 PM

South Korea has launched an investigation into a fire and explosion on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident has raised regional tensions after US President Donald Trump blamed Iran for the attack. Authorities are now working to determine the exact cause of the blast.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry said the cause will be confirmed after the vessel is towed and inspected. Officials confirmed that the Panama-flagged ship, operated by HMM, was empty and anchored at the time of the incident. The fire has since been extinguished with no reported casualties.

The blaze reportedly began in the engine room of the vessel named HMM Namu. A company spokesperson said surveillance footage showed the fire had been brought under control. All 24 crew members remained safe on board the ship.

Maritime security experts suggested multiple possible causes, including an attack, a drifting sea mine, or external damage. Authorities in South Korea have advised nearby vessels to move to safer waters. Shipping companies are coordinating closely with officials amid rising concerns.
