State-affiliated and semi-official Iranian outlets claimed that several US vessels, including three destroyers near the Strait of Hormuz, were targeted by Iranian naval forces. The reports further alleged that US military ships were forced to retreat after sustaining damage. The Pentagon had not immediately responded to the claims at the time of reporting.
Earlier, the US military said it had disabled an Iranian-flagged oil tanker attempting to sail toward an Iranian port. According to US officials, American forces used an F-18 fighter jet to strike the vessel’s rudder, preventing its movement.
The latest developments mark another escalation in tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
Recent weeks have seen heightened military activity and diplomatic tensions in the region amid ongoing friction between Washington and Tehran over maritime security, sanctions and broader geopolitical disputes.
The incident comes as diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran continue, with both sides reportedly exploring possibilities for a broader agreement to ease hostilities.
Security analysts have warned that any direct confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt global energy markets and intensify regional instability.
Neither side has independently verified the full extent of the reported confrontation or any alleged damage to US vessels.
