Rubio says diplomacy still possible with Iran

Published on: May 25, 2026 4:03 PM

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington will secure a strong agreement with Iran or respond through “another way.” He stressed the United States still prefers diplomacy before considering alternative measures. Rubio’s remarks came as efforts continued to ease tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.

Speaking in New Delhi on Monday, Rubio said the US would give negotiations every opportunity to succeed. He noted discussions included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and launching serious nuclear negotiations. Rubio described the current proposal as a meaningful and time-limited framework for diplomacy.

The comments followed growing international attention on talks between Washington and Tehran after recent regional tensions. Officials from both sides have signalled cautious optimism over a possible agreement. However, uncertainty remains over whether Iran will accept conditions linked to its nuclear activities and regional conduct.

Rubio said negotiators were working toward a practical arrangement that could reduce conflict risks across the Middle East. He added that reopening the strategic waterway remained a major priority for global stability and trade. The Strait of Hormuz handles a significant share of the world’s oil shipments.

The US has repeatedly warned Iran against actions threatening regional security while maintaining pressure through diplomacy and sanctions. Meanwhile, international observers continue monitoring the talks closely for signs of progress or escalation.
