PMD issues nationwide thunderstorm alert

Published on: June 1, 2026 9:56 PM

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rain, dust storms, and thunderstorms across the country’s upper regions from June 2 to June 5. The weather system matters because it may trigger flash floods, landslides, and damage to vulnerable structures. Residents, farmers, travelers, and local authorities in several provinces are expected to be affected.

According to the PMD, a westerly weather system is approaching northern parts of the country and will influence weather conditions over the coming days. The department expects scattered thunderstorms and rainfall in many areas of Punjab and Islamabad. Some locations may also experience heavy downpours and hailstorms during the forecast period.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain and thunderstorms are likely in upper and central districts, including tourist destinations and mountainous regions. Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir is expected to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by strong winds and isolated heavy falls. Gilgit-Baltistan is also forecast to experience intermittent rain and thunderstorms between June 4 and June 6.

The PMD said upper Sindh and northeastern Balochistan could witness dust storms, gusty winds, and thunderstorms. Areas including Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Quetta, Zhob, and Ziarat are expected to remain under the influence of the weather system. Officials warned that strong winds and hail may damage weak infrastructure, crops, and power lines.

The department has advised farmers to plan agricultural activities according to the forecast and urged tourists to remain cautious while visiting northern areas. It also warned of possible landslides in vulnerable regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir from June 3 to June 6. Authorities have been directed to stay alert and implement precautionary measures to minimize potential risks.
