4.9-magnitude quake felt in Lahore

Published on: June 5, 2026 11:50 PM

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Lahore and surrounding areas on Friday, causing tremors across parts of Punjab. The quake prompted concern among residents but no immediate reports of casualties or damage emerged. People in affected areas felt the shaking and briefly moved outdoors for safety.

According to the Seismological Centre, the earthquake measured 4.9 on the Richter scale. Officials said the quake originated at a depth of 18 kilometres below the surface. The relatively shallow depth contributed to the tremors being felt across a wider area.

The centre reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was located in the Kashmir-India border region. Residents in Lahore and nearby districts experienced the tremors for several seconds. Social media users also reported feeling the earthquake in different parts of the province.

Authorities have not issued reports of significant structural damage or injuries so far. Emergency services remained on alert while officials monitored the situation. Local administrations advised residents to follow safety precautions in case of aftershocks.

Pakistan frequently experiences earthquakes because it lies near the boundary of major tectonic plates. Seismic activity is common in northern and northeastern regions, including Kashmir and adjoining areas. Experts continue to monitor the situation for any further developments.
