Heavy rains prompt nationwide flood alert

Published on: June 16, 2026 5:29 PM

The National Disaster Management Authority issued a flood alert as heavy rainfall is forecast from June 16 to 20. Authorities warned that intense rain, strong winds, and glacier melt could trigger flooding. The advisory affects residents, tourists, and travellers across northern and upper Pakistan.

According to the NDMA, a westerly weather system will bring thunderstorms, gusty winds, and scattered rainfall to several regions. Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Balochistan, and parts of Sindh are expected to receive rain during the period. Hailstorms may also occur in some areas, increasing the risk of weather-related disruptions.

Furthermore, the authority warned that rising temperatures combined with rainfall could create flood-like situations between June 16 and 19. Northern districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir remain particularly vulnerable. Officials said heavy water flows may develop rapidly in streams, rivers, and low-lying areas.

The advisory also highlighted the danger of glacial lake outburst floods in mountainous regions. Areas including Hassanabad, Shishper, Gulkin, Gulmit, Passu, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, and Shigar face elevated risks. In addition, landslides and road blockages may occur in hilly regions due to unstable ground conditions and persistent rainfall.

NDMA has directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert and monitor sensitive locations closely. Authorities urged tourists and travellers to check weather forecasts and road conditions before visiting northern areas. The agency advised residents in vulnerable regions to follow official updates and take precautionary measures to ensure safety.
