AJK Police detain 425 individuals over recent unrest

Published on: June 17, 2026 6:52 AM

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Police on Thursday released a detailed report on the recent violent incidents linked to protests organized by the banned Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), stating that four people lost their lives and 89 police personnel sustained injuries during the disturbances. According to a statement issued by the police spokesperson, the injured officers were immediately shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for medical treatment. The report further alleged that protesters caused damage to public property exceeding Rs20 million during the demonstrations, prompting law enforcement agencies to launch swift operations to restore order. The spokesperson said that around 30 individuals were arrested on the spot during the unrest, while a broader crackdown was initiated across the region. Between June 6 and June 14, 2026, police registered 81 cases at various police stations and took 425 individuals into custody on charges related to law and order violations. Authorities also identified 15 alleged key instigators, with efforts underway to apprehend them.
