Football: Soccer-Diaz shines as Colombia beat Uzbekistan 3-1 | The Star

Colombia secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in their FIFA World Cup 2026 encounter played on the morning of June 18, strengthening their position in the tournament with an impressive attacking display.

The South American side took control of the match in the first half and managed to break the deadlock in the 40th minute through Daniel Muñoz. The defender found the back of the net after sustained pressure from Colombia, giving his team a deserved lead heading into the halftime break.

Uzbekistan struggled to create clear scoring opportunities during the opening 45 minutes as Colombia dominated possession and dictated the tempo of the game. The first half ended with Colombia holding a 1-0 advantage.

After the restart, Colombia continued to press forward and doubled their lead through star forward Luis Díaz. The goal further strengthened Colombia’s grip on the contest and put Uzbekistan under increasing pressure.

Colombia then added a third goal through Jimenton, effectively putting the result beyond doubt. Although Uzbekistan managed to score once and reduce the deficit, they were unable to mount a comeback against a disciplined Colombian side.

The victory gives Colombia an important boost in their World Cup campaign, while Uzbekistan will look to regroup and improve their performance in upcoming matches. Colombia’s attacking trio proved decisive, with the team displaying both efficiency in front of goal and defensive solidity throughout most of the game.

In another World Cup fixture, Portugal and Congo played out a 1-1 draw. Both goals came during the first half, and neither side was able to find a winner after the break despite several attempts.

Earlier, Ghana claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama. The winning goal came in the closing stages of the match, allowing Ghana to secure all three points in dramatic fashion and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
