A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad on Monday, causing panic among residents. The tremors were felt across several major cities and surrounding areas. However, no casualties or property damage were immediately reported.
According to the Seismological Centre, the earthquake originated in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountain range. The quake occurred at a depth of 215 kilometres, allowing tremors to spread across a wide geographical area. Authorities continue to monitor the situation for any aftershocks or related developments.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, strong tremors were reported in Peshawar, Swat, Bajaur, Buner, Hangu, Shangla, Kohat, Mohmand, and Shabqadar. Residents rushed out of homes, offices, and commercial buildings after feeling the shaking. Many gathered in open spaces as a precaution.
Meanwhile, the earthquake was also felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Dera Ismail Khan, Multan, and several other cities. Witnesses said the tremors lasted for several seconds and created fear among citizens. Emergency services remained alert despite the absence of damage reports.
Pakistan frequently experiences earthquakes because it lies near the boundary of major tectonic plates. The Hindu Kush region is known for generating deep earthquakes that are felt across Pakistan and neighbouring countries. Officials have urged citizens to remain calm and follow safety guidelines during seismic events.
