Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, while reacting to Khawaja Saad Rafique’s statement, said that Khawaja Saad Rafique should first hold local government elections in Punjab, give the people of Punjab their constitutional rights, and then lecture other provinces on democratic systems.
In a statement, he said that before raising questions about Karachi’s local government system, Khawaja Saad Rafique should explain to the people why local government elections have not been held in Punjab. It is surprising that the PML-N, which is reluctant to conduct local government elections in Punjab, is criticising the democratic process and local government system of Karachi.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that if local government elections are truly the foundation of democracy, then the people of Punjab should also be given their constitutional right, as the PPP government in Sindh has already provided the people with their democratic rights.
He said that local government elections in Karachi were held in accordance with the Constitution and the law; the people elected their representatives, and the democratic process was completed. Instead of objecting to the people’s decision, Khawaja Saad Rafique should respect democratic traditions.
Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the PPP believes in democratic institutions, an empowered local government system, and respecting the public mandate. He added that politics based on double standards cannot continue for long in front of the people.
