Hyderabad Renames Road as ‘Donald Trump Avenue’, Sparking Political Debate

Published on: June 27, 2026 4:15 AM

Donald Trump Avenue

India’s city of Hyderabad has officially renamed a road as Donald Trump Avenue, a move that has attracted widespread attention and political criticism. The road is located near the US Consulate and offices of several major American companies, making the Donald Trump Avenue decision a notable development in India-US relations.

According to a statement shared by US President Donald Trump on social media, he described the renaming as the first honour of its kind for any American president in India and expressed his gratitude. The decision was made in Hyderabad, the capital of India’s southern state of Telangana, where the Congress Party is currently in power.

The newly named road is situated close to the US Consulate as well as offices of leading American technology companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. Interestingly, former US presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush visited Hyderabad during their terms, while Donald Trump has never visited the city.

The decision has triggered strong political reactions within India. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the Congress Party, accusing it of hypocrisy over the move. The controversy has added another political dimension to the road renaming.

The development also comes at a time when Donald Trump Avenue is drawing attention amid changing regional diplomacy. Recent months have seen improved US-Pakistan relations under the Trump administration, while US-India ties have faced challenges following the imposition of additional tariffs on Indian goods by Washington.
