The Punjab government has announced financial assistance for families affected by the Kahna tuition centre roof collapse that claimed the lives of 14 children and injured several others in Lahore. Adviser to the Chief Minister Zeeshan Malik said each family of the deceased will receive Rs2 million, while every injured child will be provided Rs500,000 to support medical treatment and recovery.
The tragedy occurred at a tuition centre operating inside a residential house in Lahore’s Kahna area. According to initial findings, children were attending classes on the ground floor while construction work was underway above the roof, where soil was being placed for tile installation. The weakened TR-girder roof reportedly failed under the additional weight and collapsed onto the students below.
The incident has raised serious concerns about building safety standards, construction practices and the legal status of the tuition centre. Families have questioned whether the building was structurally safe, under which regulations the centre was operating and whether proper inspections had been carried out before allowing children to study there.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took immediate notice of the incident and directed authorities to submit a detailed report. Police have arrested three suspects, including the property owner and a mechanic, as investigators continue examining possible negligence. However, grieving families continue demanding accountability and want those responsible for the deadly collapse to face legal action.
Meanwhile, injured teacher Anila, who is receiving treatment at Lahore General Hospital, said she had been teaching at the centre for two years to support her family. She revealed that the roof had previously leaked during rainfall, prompting repair work before the collapse. The tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of building safety regulations and stronger oversight to prevent similar incidents from claiming more innocent lives.
