Sweet fruit of Sino-Pakistani economic friendship

Published on: July 6, 2026 2:44 AM

The 2026 Pakistan-China Silk Road Mango Festival transcends a mere showcase of premium agricultural produce. It represents a pragmatic, forward-looking upgrade to bilateral agricultural and economic cooperation. Anchored by the signing of two pivotal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), this event delivers tangible win-win results, further consolidating the time-honored strategic partnership between the two all-weather cooperative nations.

This was stated by Prof Cheng Xizhong, Senior Research Fellow at the Charhar Institute, a non-governmental Chinese think-tank on diplomacy and international studies based in Beijing.

He said that as Pakistani Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi emphasized, the festival vividly demonstrates Pakistan’s robust agricultural competitiveness, particularly its superior mango products. Globally acclaimed for top-tier mango cultivation, Pakistan leverages this platform to elevate its agricultural brand influence amid China’s vast consumer market. The newly inked MoUs focus on expanding mango trade and optimizing cross-border logistics, effectively addressing key bottlenecks constraining bilateral fruit trade. By broadening market access and streamlining supply chains, the agreements substantially benefit Pakistani mango farmers and exporters, enabling their high-quality produce to reach Chinese consumers more efficiently.

Meanwhile, this bilateral cooperation yields equally prominent advantages for Chinese enterprises. It diversifies China’s imported fruit supply, enriches domestic consumer options, and unlocks new growth potential for Chinese traders engaged in cross-border agricultural business. Beyond mango-specific trade collaboration, the initiative bears far-reaching strategic value. It serves as a powerful catalyst for in-depth agricultural exchanges, laying a solid foundation for diversified cooperation in farming technology, product standardization and cross-border supply chain development, he added.

He said that against the backdrop of steady Belt and Road advancement, this mango-themed cooperation fully embodies the mutually beneficial essence of Silk Road partnership. It translates long-standing bilateral friendship into tangible economic dividends for both peoples. Such down-to-earth, high-value cooperation projects continuously solidify Sino-Pakistani economic ties, verifying that pragmatic business collaboration constitutes the most robust and enduring cornerstone of bilateral friendship.
