Flash floods devastate Diamer as Karakoram Highway remains blocked

Published on: July 13, 2026 3:35 PM

Torrential rains triggered powerful flash floods across several valleys of Diamer overnight, causing widespread destruction to homes, farmland, roads and public infrastructure. The floods also blocked the Karakoram Highway, leaving hundreds of passengers, freight vehicles and tourists stranded. Emergency teams started rescue and assessment work while authorities began efforts to restore damaged routes and essential services.

Floodwaters caused serious damage in more than six locations of Thor, where many houses, standing crops, agricultural land and trees suffered heavy losses. In addition, flood debris entered residential areas and blocked the Thor link road at several points, completely stopping traffic. The floods also disrupted electricity in different parts of the affected region, creating further hardships for local residents.

Meanwhile, the powerful floodwaters swept away 13 dumpers, one excavator, a crushing plant and two water tankers belonging to a private company, highlighting the scale of destruction. In Khanbari, farmland, crops, trees and link roads also sustained major damage. At the same time, severe flooding in Bonar Das forced authorities to close the Karakoram Highway for all types of traffic.

The highway remained blocked near Gonar Farm Nursery in Chilas after floodwaters covered the road, causing long queues of vehicles on both sides. Consequently, women, children and elderly passengers remained stranded for hours, while travellers urged authorities to reopen the route quickly and restore the movement of people, goods and essential supplies without further delay.

In Niat, flash floods damaged the link road at several locations, making travel difficult for residents and disrupting daily activities across the area. Local communities demanded immediate relief, restoration of electricity and urgent repairs to damaged roads. Meanwhile, district authorities and emergency teams continued clearing debris, repairing bridges and assessing losses as restoration work moved forward across the flood-affected region.
