UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is reportedly preparing plans for a national bank holiday if England win the FIFA World Cup 2026. Reports indicate that Friday, July 24, is the preferred date for nationwide celebrations, allowing enough time for the team to return home after the tournament final.

Although no official announcement has been made, Starmer recently avoided confirming the proposal while speaking to reporters. He said he did not want to “jinx” England’s chances and suggested the question should be raised again if the national team reaches the World Cup final.
England will face defending champions Argentina in the semi-final, while France and Spain compete in the other last-four match. If England secure victory and qualify for the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19, Starmer is expected to travel to the United States to support the team.

Reports also suggest the prime minister could face a demanding schedule if England reach the final, as he would need to return to London shortly after the match. He is expected to deliver his final speech from Downing Street and formally recommend Andy Burnham as his successor to the King within hours of returning.
Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over whether the proposed bank holiday would apply across the entire United Kingdom, as public holiday arrangements differ between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England last lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy in 1966 after defeating West Germany at Wembley Stadium, making another title a historic moment for the nation.
