Sridevi, Shashi Kapoor remembered at Oscars 2018

Published on: March 5, 2018 6:01 PM

LOS ANGELES: Indian cinema icon, Shashi Kapoor, and India’s first female superstar, Sridevi, were both honoured at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday night during the ‘In Memoriam’ montage.

The Indian stars received a musical tribute by Eddie Vedder who stormed the stage to sing Tom Petty’s Room At The Top.

The segment was introduced by Jennifer Garner, who began by paying tribute to the late star Audrey Hepburn. “There is no joy without sorrow,” Garner said, followed by her acknowledging the loss of film world with the departed souls.

Son of Prithviraj Kapoor and younger brother of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor made his debut in Bollywood with his 1961 film Dharmputra. He went on to make a name by associating himself with international cinema. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, in 2011, which is the third highest civilian honour. In 2015, he was held in high regards with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He passed away on December 4, 2017.

Sridevi, known for her ability to slip into a myriad of roles, having ridiculously expressive eyes and sheer comic timing, passed away on February 24, 2018. Her untimely death left everyone shocked and saddened.

The two revered stars were made part of the annual montage along with stars such as John Heard, Jane Foray, Tony Anne Walker, Robert Osborne, Martin Landau, Roger Moore, Glenne Headly, George A. Romero, and Jerry Lewis.

Jimmy Kimmel was the host of the night, and the ceremony was held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday.
