Pakistan’s ambassador to UN: We haven’t exercised our right to self-defense yet

Published on: May 9, 2025 3:28 PM

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, clarified that Pakistan has not yet invoked its right to respond under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows for self-defense in the case of an armed attack. In an interview with Turkish media, Iftikhar emphasized that Pakistan’s actions following the Indian attack on May 6 and 7 were purely defensive measures. He stressed that Pakistan has not escalated the situation but has only taken retaliatory steps after India’s aggression.

Iftikhar also addressed the sensitive nature of the Kashmir region, describing it as a potential nuclear flashpoint, which has drawn significant global attention. He mentioned that a British newspaper had referred to Kashmir as a geopolitical fault line.

As a responsible nuclear power, Pakistan holds a clear position on peace and stability but will not tolerate unjust aggression from any nation. He reiterated that while Pakistan desires peace, it must protect its sovereignty and respond when necessary.

Regarding the recent events, Iftikhar called for an independent and transparent investigation into the incident. He made it clear that it is unacceptable for a country to accuse another and then act as both judge and jury.

Pakistan is open to talks and seeks a peaceful resolution, but the response from India, according to Iftikhar, has not been positive or conducive to dialogue. The Ambassador emphasized that Pakistan has been trying to de-escalate tensions, but the situation remains concerning due to India’s actions.

Finally, Iftikhar expressed grave concern about the ongoing tensions. He warned that if the current situation continues, it could spiral out of control and lead to further instability. He stressed the urgent need for the international community to step in and help mediate a peaceful resolution.

Pakistan, he noted, does not wish to escalate the conflict and is actively seeking ways to bring down the temperature and find a diplomatic solution. The world must act to prevent further escalation and safeguard peace in the region.
