Pakistan prioritizes peace, responded to Indian strikes with restraint: DG ISPR

Published on: May 18, 2025 3:39 PM

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s military spokesperson has reaffirmed the country’s peaceful intentions, stating that Pakistan is not a violent nation and remains committed to regional stability. Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, made the remarks in a recent interview with RT Arabic.

The statement comes after rising tensions with India earlier this month, following Indian airstrikes in Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on May 6–7, which killed over 30 civilians. In response, Pakistan shot down five Indian fighter jets and intercepted multiple drones, but kept its retaliation focused on military targets only.

Lt Gen Chaudhry revealed that the Pakistan Armed Forces launched “Operation Bunyan Marsoos” on May 9, targeting Indian military installations while deliberately avoiding civilian infrastructure. He added that Pakistan’s response was responsible and measured, underscoring its desire to avoid escalating the conflict.

Importantly, he disclosed that a ceasefire was requested by an Indian defence official and brokered through American mediation. He praised Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement, calling it a “mature and effective” approach to diffusing the crisis.

Furthermore, he criticized India for rejecting Pakistan’s call for a neutral investigation into the Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), for which New Delhi blamed Islamabad without providing evidence. He stressed that missile attacks on civilians were unjustified and escalatory.

Lt Gen Chaudhry also accused India of supporting terrorism within Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan, through proxy groups. He reaffirmed that Pakistan’s armed forces are fully prepared to defend the nation’s sovereignty and will respond firmly to any future aggression.
