Vaccine refusals rise in Karachi: Over 37,000 parents reject polio drops in May

Published on: June 17, 2025 5:34 PM

Vaccine refusals in Karachi are increasing at an alarming rate. During the May anti-polio campaign, over 37,000 parents refused to vaccinate their children. This growing resistance is becoming a serious hurdle for the country’s efforts to eliminate polio.

The Emergency Operation Center (EOC) shared detailed data about the refusals. The highest number came from Karachi East, where 9,433 parents rejected polio drops. Central district followed with 7,141 refusals, and Keamari reported 7,011 cases of non-cooperation from parents.

Other areas also showed disturbing figures. In Malir, 4,606 parents refused the vaccine, while Korangi reported 3,453. The South district had 3,145 refusals, and 2,922 were recorded in West district. These numbers show a rising trend compared to April, when 37,360 parents declined polio drops.

Health officials are concerned about this pattern. Polio remains a dangerous, life-altering disease, especially for children. Regular vaccination is crucial to prevent its spread. Yet, misinformation, fear, and mistrust still influence many families.

Authorities are urging parents to cooperate with health workers. They say rejecting polio drops puts all children at risk. To reach full eradication, public awareness campaigns and stronger community engagement are now more important than ever.
