Government approves import of 500,000 tons of sugar to control prices

Published on: June 23, 2025 6:21 PM

The Sugar Advisory Board has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar to manage rising prices in the country. The decision came during a high-level meeting led by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain. Officials agreed that sugar supply is short, and immediate steps are needed to avoid further price hikes.

During the meeting, members blamed sugar mill owners for manipulating prices. They said the owners are creating artificial shortages to increase profit. Therefore, the government decided to monitor sugar supply and distribution strictly. Officials believe strong oversight will stop unfair pricing and help stabilize the market.

Rana Tanveer said importing sugar was now necessary due to low supplies across the country. He mentioned that formalities for importing sugar will be completed in a few days. Moreover, he assured that the imported sugar will be made available quickly to ease the burden on consumers.

The minister explained that the government is serious about providing relief. He added that imported sugar will reach the market soon. This move aims to ensure better availability and fair pricing for the general public.

The decision comes at a time when citizens are struggling with high grocery bills. While sugar prices have risen sharply, this new step is expected to provide some relief. The government has promised to take more actions if needed to protect consumer rights.
