ICC penalizes Sammy for code breach after umpire criticism

Published on: June 29, 2025 12:57 PM

West Indies coach Darren Sammy has been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for publicly criticizing an umpire during a press conference. The ICC found him guilty of breaching its Code of Conduct following comments made on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia.

According to the ICC, Sammy violated Article 2.7 of the Players and Support Staff Code, which relates to public criticism of match officials. As a result, he has been fined 15% of his match fee and handed one demerit point.

The incident occurred when Sammy expressed dissatisfaction over several umpiring decisions during his media briefing. The ICC classified it as a Level 1 offense — the least severe under its disciplinary system but still punishable.

Sammy has accepted the charge and acknowledged his mistake, avoiding a formal hearing. This disciplinary action serves as a reminder that all comments regarding match officials must remain respectful and within ICC guidelines.

The fine comes amid recent headlines involving Sammy, including his rejection of an offer to coach Pakistan’s national team. Despite his popularity and media presence, the ICC has maintained its stance on upholding professional conduct across the sport.
