Pakistan seeks chinese, AIIB investment for key road projects

Published on: July 4, 2025 10:47 PM

Pakistan is ramping up efforts to attract foreign investment in its road infrastructure sector, with Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan holding crucial meetings in Tianjin, China, with top officials from China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

During talks with CRBC Chairman Du Fei, the minister presented major highway ventures, including the Mansehra–Naran–Jhal Kand Motorway, as high-potential opportunities. Du Fei expressed strong interest in expanding CRBC’s role in Pakistan, recalling the company’s long-standing involvement in national infrastructure projects like the Karakoram Highway, Sukkur Bypass, and Karachi Coastal Highway.

CRBC is also eyeing participation in large-scale initiatives such as the ML-1 Railway Project, Lahore Airport expansion, and Pakistan Refinery upgrades. In response, Abdul Aleem Khan assured full government support and said CRBC will remain a key partner in modernizing Pakistan’s transport landscape.

In a separate meeting with AIIB officials, including Chief Investment Officer Konstantin Limitovskiy and Director General Xiaohong Yang, the minister proposed investment in the M-6 Sukkur–Hyderabad and M-9 Karachi–Hyderabad motorways. He described these projects as critical links to Karachi Port, capable of accelerating trade and economic transformation.

Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized that infrastructure investment is central to job creation and sustainable economic growth. He also hailed the strengthening Pakistan–China partnership and called for greater AIIB engagement to promote regional connectivity and prosperity. AIIB leaders expressed keen interest in the proposed projects and pledged support for Pakistan’s development goals.
