James Gunn reinvents superman for a new era of heroes

Published on: July 7, 2025 5:28 PM

LOS ANGELES — Director James Gunn has brought a brand-new version of Superman to the big screen. Known for his work on Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Gunn takes a bold step with this reboot. The film, simply titled Superman, hits international theaters on Wednesday and opens in the U.S. and Canada on Friday.

Gunn said his goal was to show a side of Superman that fans haven’t seen before. In the very first scene, the Man of Steel is bloodied after a fight — a rare sight for the usually flawless hero. “I wanted to explore a piece of him that we’ve missed,” Gunn explained.

This new version features a colorful world full of superhero friends, monsters, robots, and even a flying dog named Krypto. Gunn said he drew inspiration from his childhood comics. Krypto, introduced in the 1950s, is based on Gunn’s own rescue dog, adding a personal touch to the story.

Warner Bros hopes Superman will spark a fresh start for DC Studios. Gunn, now co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, is planning a slate of new projects. These include Supergirl (2026), Swamp Thing, and Lanterns — a grounded HBO Max show. “Each story will have its own feel,” Gunn said.

Though Gunn admits he felt pressure to deliver, he’s happy with the result. “I’m feeling pretty good,” he said. “It’s fun to see how people are reacting to the film.” With high hopes and early buzz, Superman is flying back into theaters — this time, with fresh energy and heart.
