The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has issued a strong warning for landslides and flash floods in northern Pakistan, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K). The alert comes ahead of moderate to heavy monsoon rains forecast from July 13 to 17. Affected regions include Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Diamir, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, and several areas along the Karakoram Highway and Jaglot–Skardu Road.
NEOC has urged people in high-risk zones to avoid travel unless necessary and to stay alert for mudslides, slope failures, and ground subsidence. Key vulnerable locations include Upper Kohistan (RD 200–240), Diamir (RD 340–380), Nagar (RD 460), and Gilgit (RD 400). Emergency services have been directed to stay on high alert and keep response teams and heavy machinery on standby.
In addition, a hydrological outlook predicts rising water levels in all major rivers. The Indus, Kabul, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers are expected to swell due to moisture from the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, along with an active westerly wave system. Barrages at Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa are already experiencing low to medium flood levels.
Smaller rivers such as Swat and Panjkora, along with associated streams and nullahs, are also expected to overflow. NEOC advised citizens near water bodies to remain vigilant and follow official weather updates. Areas downstream of rivers may face localized flooding or waterlogging during this period.
The NDMA and provincial disaster authorities (GBDMA and SDMA) are coordinating to ensure timely alerts and a swift response. The public is advised to stay informed through television, radio, SMS, and the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app. Authorities urged people to secure their homes, avoid risky travel routes, and report any emergencies promptly.
