Authorities across Pakistan have issued flood alerts due to ongoing heavy monsoon rains. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warned of moderate to heavy rainfall, rising river flows, and possible flash floods in many areas, especially vulnerable low-lying regions.
The alerts, effective until July 17, cover urban centers like Lahore and Islamabad, as well as flood-prone hill torrent zones in southern Punjab and Balochistan. The monsoon system is expected to intensify because of moisture coming from the Arabian Sea, increasing rainfall and river levels.
Several major rivers, including the Indus, Kabul, Jhelum, and Chenab, are experiencing rising water flows. Currently, the Tarbela, Taunsa, and Guddu barrages are at low flood levels, while Kalabagh and Chashma face moderate flooding. Flash floods are also likely in smaller tributaries near Swat, Panjkora, and parts of Balochistan.
Residents living near rivers and drainage channels are urged to stay alert and prepare emergency kits. Authorities advise securing valuables, identifying safe evacuation routes, and avoiding low-lying roads and bridges. The NDMA emphasizes staying informed through TV, radio, mobile alerts, and the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app.
Meanwhile, district officials in flood-prone areas are on standby with dewatering equipment to manage urban flooding. The monsoon system is expected to continue through mid-July, so the public is advised to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines.
