Punjab university raises fees by up to 59%, sparking concerns

Published on: July 22, 2025 5:39 PM

Punjab University has increased its tuition fees by up to 59 percent. The new fee structure affects various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. According to the university, the fee hike was approved by the syndicate and takes effect this month.

Overall, the university raised average fees by 28 percent. The largest increase was in the LLM program, where the fee rose by Rs7,825 — a 59 percent hike. Undergraduate degrees such as BSc, B.Com, BBA, and MBA saw a 15 percent increase.

Pharmacy students will also pay more. The Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm-D) fee jumped from Rs18,000 to Rs23,000. Meanwhile, the LLB program experienced a 28 percent rise, and fees for medical diplomas increased by 16 percent.

University officials defended the decision, stating it was necessary due to rising operational costs. They said the changes were approved through proper administrative channels, including the university syndicate. However, they did not mention any plans to offer financial relief or scholarships.

Students and parents have expressed frustration over the sudden hike. Many say the increase puts higher education out of reach for deserving students. Some student unions have also criticized the move and are planning protests in response.
