PMD warns of heavy rain, gusty winds in Punjab and KP

Published on: July 23, 2025 5:14 PM

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds across several regions of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) within the next 12 to 24 hours. The sudden weather shift is expected to affect both urban and rural areas, bringing with it possible risks of flooding, power outages, and property damage.

In KP, rain and strong winds are likely in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Mansehra, Battagram, Abbottabad, Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Kohat, Hangu, and nearby areas. These districts are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with the possibility of landslides in hilly regions. Torrential rain combined with wind gusts may disrupt normal life and transport routes.

Punjab is also bracing for widespread showers. Cities under alert include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Narowal, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Kasur, Okara, Sahiwal, and Pakpattan. Rainfall in these areas may lead to waterlogging in low-lying urban areas and impact daily activities, especially during peak traffic hours.

The PMD warned that falling trees, weakened billboards, and damaged infrastructure pose a serious risk during the expected gusty winds. Low visibility during downpours may increase the likelihood of road accidents. Disruptions to electricity supply are also expected due to the vulnerability of overhead power lines.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during heavy rain, avoid standing under trees or near old structures, and park vehicles in safe areas. People should keep emergency supplies ready and monitor weather updates regularly. Local authorities have been asked to stay alert and respond swiftly in case of flooding or infrastructure damage.
