PSB boosts medal rewards to motivate athletes

Published on: July 27, 2025 3:17 PM

The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has announced a major increase in cash rewards for athletes who win medals in global competitions. This revised policy was approved during PSB’s 34th board meeting and aims to encourage better performances by offering bigger financial incentives. Notably, the reward for an Olympic gold medal has tripled from Rs10 million to Rs30 million under the new framework.

The updated policy also brings significant changes to silver and bronze medal payouts. Olympic silver medalists will now receive Rs20.5 million, up from Rs7.5 million, while bronze winners will get Rs10 million instead of Rs5 million. Moreover, gold medalists in the Asian Games will now earn Rs10.5 million, with silver and bronze medalists receiving Rs7 million and Rs5 million, respectively—considerably more than before.

In addition, rewards for the Commonwealth Games have been raised as well. Gold medal winners will now get Rs7.5 million, compared to the earlier Rs5 million. Silver and bronze medalists will receive Rs5 million and Rs3 million respectively, ensuring all podium finishers are fairly rewarded. This move reflects PSB’s focus on recognizing athletes across all competitive levels.

For the first time, the PSB has introduced a tiered reward system for World and Asian Championships based on event frequency. A four-year world title will now bring in Rs7.5 million, biennial champions will receive Rs5 million, and annual winners will take home Rs3 million. The same structure will apply to Asian Championships and junior-level competitions, offering more clarity and consistency.

Furthermore, cue sports and squash have received dedicated reward brackets. A player winning the IBSF World Snooker title will earn Rs1.5 million, while an Asian Snooker gold medal will be worth Rs0.75 million. Squash champions of top global events like the British Open will receive Rs10 million, and junior champions will get Rs5 million, further expanding the reward reach.

The policy also maintains support for athletes participating in Paralympics, Deaflympics, and Blind Games, along with teams and coaches. However, these categories will now benefit from the revised prize structure and increased base amounts, making the reward system more inclusive and performance-driven.
