Punjab has successfully converted animal waste into biogas for the first time, under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s “Clean Punjab – Waste to Value” initiative. The pilot project was carried out in Lakho Dher area, using biodegradable livestock residues such as skins, organs, and bones to produce clean energy.
Processing 1,000 metric tons of animal waste yielded approximately 20,000 to 25,000 kilograms of biogas. This pilot is expected to generate revenue between Rs 60–70 lakh, all from a modest initial investment. Project leads believe larger-scale deployment could significantly boost green energy production.
The initiative is designed to complement a proposed 50 MW waste-to-energy facility. This plant would process around 3,000 tons of solid waste daily to generate electricity. It is also projected that, over ten years, gas harvested from landfill sites could earn up to US $2.5 million in additional revenue.
Experts noted that repurposing animal and biodegradable waste reduces landfill pollution, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and enhances public health and sanitation outcomes—especially during Qurbani season. Local teams are now exploring ways to scale the technology to other districts across Punjab.
Officials expressed optimism that the successful pilot will pave the way for broader sustainable energy projects in the province. They invited stakeholders from government and private sectors to replicate the model in Lahore and beyond.
