Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has sharply criticised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him politically isolated both at home and on the global stage. He said Modi has become an “international joke” and is no longer respected by world leaders. Asif claimed that when Modi tries to greet other leaders, they avoid shaking hands with him.
These remarks come after Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi questioned Modi’s silence over former US President Donald Trump’s claim. Trump had stated that five Indian fighter jets were shot down by Pakistan during recent border clashes, a statement Modi has neither confirmed nor denied publicly.
Asif stressed that Modi’s continued denial of aircraft losses is damaging his credibility. He also pointed to recent Indian parliamentary sessions, where Modi reportedly faced visible embarrassment while addressing lawmakers. “He’s trying to rebuild his lost political strength, but it’s too late,” Asif stated.
Furthermore, Asif urged Modi to admit the truth about the recent conflict, where more than 70 people were killed over four days. He noted that even Indian military officials and media outlets have acknowledged jet losses, contradicting Modi’s stance.
On the other hand, Modi recently addressed India’s parliament, denying that any international leader influenced India’s military decisions. He did not mention Trump directly but insisted that no one pushed India to halt its operations against Pakistan during “Operation Sindoor.”
Trump, however, continues to stand by his version, saying his involvement prevented further escalation. “If I weren’t around, India and Pakistan would be in a full-blown war,” Trump claimed during a recent speech in Scotland.
